Abstract:

Protoplasts obtained by zymolyase treatment of Sacharomyces cerevisiae, containing immunologically detectable cell wall, can regenerate efficiently. Further treatment with zymolyase to a state where the cell wall is not detectable immunologically by cell wall-specific antibodies, renders them incapable of regeneration, even though protein synthesis and glycosylation in such protoplastsis not significantly different from protoplasts that retain their full regeneration capacity. It appears that, in yeast, preformed cell wall is needed to assemble the cell wall components to make more of it.
