Abstract:

Certain microorganisms (1-4), plant root tip cells (5,6) amphibian egg cells (7,8), ascites tumour cells (9,10) and bone marrow cells (9) have been shown to take up ribonuclease (RNase). However, the effect of the RNase taken up by these cells on its RNA or RNA-containing sub-cellular structures was not studied. Here we present evidence which suggests that rat liver parenchymal cells in suspension can also take up pancreatic RNAse, which initially degrades their ribosomal RNA (r-RNA) in such a way that the overall integrity of at least the ribosomal subunits is maintained.
