Abstract:

In the history of every major scientific discipline, a time comes when solutions to a large number of problems that have plagued the minds of those who have pursued the discipline, emerge concurrently, one leading to the other in quick succession, as If many pieces of a large jig-saw puzzle have found their place in one inspired attempt. Such moments in history not only provide much intellectual satisfaction but they also throw up new intellectual challenges that could not have been thought of earlier. This is what has happened in biology since 1950. Consequently, today, just as the solved problems present an exquisite picture that could not have been imagined five decades earlier, the unsolved problems hold a promise that could not have been dreamt of just a decade or two ago.
