Abstract:

Intercellular material and cell contact are two of the major parameters characterizing intercellular organization in higher organisms. It seems reasonable to assume that they influence the biochemical properties and, indirectly, the functions expressed in the tissue, of the component cells. I should like to present an experimental approach towards understanding what these properties might be and to describe some results obtained by following this approach. I shall then briefly discuss possible implications of intercellular controls in two phenomena, ageing and carcinogenesis.
